It’s no surprise why it’s become so popular. What might come as a surprise is where it is found: this apparently tropical body of water is actually in the cold region of Siberia in Russia. The surprises don’t end there—this lovely lake is actually a poisonous waste dump.

Nicknamed the“Siberian Maldives,”photos of the appealing waters have attracted more and more people to come to its shores to take selfies, hold photo shoots, and even have wedding parties. Few could have guessed that the manmade pond is actually an ash dump for the nearby power plant that provides energy to the city of Novosibirsk.
