America’s longest-running children’s television series, Sesame Street, first aired this month in 1969. Created by Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrisett, the show was meant to deliver fun, educational content for children.

To do so, Cooney and Morrisett sought the help of puppeteer Jim Henson and his Muppets. The program also uses a wide variety of animation, short films, and current events to communicate their ideas. Since its first airing, Sesame Street has produced more than 4,000 episodes.
