There are about
100,000 known species of fungi, including all mushrooms. Out of all these
species, there are about 80 that produce light through a process called bioluminescence.
Bioluminescence is fairly rare, but it does
occur in some living things such as fireflies, deep sea fish, and plankton. How
it actually occurs was considered a mystery until very recently. As it turns
out, most glowing organisms have two special chemicals that mix with oxygen to
produce“ cold light.”
