On Monday, July
29, 23 million volunteers in Ethiopia came together to answer an important
call: planting trees—lots of them. This was part of a big national project
called the Green Legacy Initiative. According to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the
project’s aim is to restore forests to the land and deal with the effects of
climate change.
By the end of
the day, over 353 million tree seedlings had been planted at 1,000 sites across
the country. Planting this many trees is a big achievement. It’s a proud moment
for Ethiopia, and it puts the country on the right path towards its goal to
restore 58,000 square miles of forest by 2020.
