Within the folk
religion of Taiwan, many gods and goddesses are worshipped, including city
gods. The function of the city god is to help the human leaders of the city
make the best decisions for the citizens.
For a long time,
temples were off limits to common people and only those in power could visit.
Nowadays, all the city god temples are open to the public, and people go
regularly to pray for their health and safety.
在臺灣的民間宗教中，眾神及許多神靈都被敬奉信仰著，包含了城隍爺（編按：又稱城隍、城隍爺公，原為「城牆」與「護城河」之意，後來演變為民間信仰中的城池守護神）。
城隍爺的職責是幫助人間的縣市首長為其居民做出最好的決定。平常人家的老百姓有很長一段時間是不得進入城隍廟的，只有當權者可以參拜。如今，所有的城隍廟都開放給大眾參拜，人們常常會去祈求自身的健康及平安。
