Ice Eggs

Last November in Finland, a photographer captured a rare sight: ice eggs! Risto Mattila was visiting Hailuoto Island in the Bay of Bothnia when he discovered the amazing phenomenon, thousands of spherical chunks of ice covering the beach. Ice eggs are rarely seen because the conditions have to be just right for them to form.
That means temperatures below zero, lots of wind, saltwater, and good timing. Ice eggs form when ocean saltwater starts to freeze. The little chunks of ice then get pushed around by the wind, which smoothes them into round balls. Finally, the high tide has to deposit them onto the shore before temperatures get too warm.
