Is Margaret Thatcher’s Hometown Ready to Put Her on a Pedestal?

Statues of the politically unpalatable have this year been toppled, beheaded and graffitied from the American South to Belgium, and Britain to New Zealand. Not even Winston Churchill was spared.

In the English town of Grantham, an 11-foot pedestal now stands empty. That’s not because the statue atop it has been vandalized — though many expect it will be once it is finally installed.

Next year, that plinth is to become the base of a stern-looking, larger-than-life bronze monument to Grantham’s most famous daughterMargaret Thatcher. Known as the "Iron Lady," Thatcher was the first female prime minister of Britain and remains a divisive and polarizing figure three decades after leaving office.

A curious dog got hold of a fiber optic cable that ran between Amite county buildings in Mississippi, chewing it to pieces.

The cable connected a courthouse and a nearby Justice Court building, Tim Wroten, the county’s sheriff, told the Enterprise-Journal.

The wire was mostly elevated but dipped to the ground by the front door of the Justice Court, where the dog chewed it. However, the culprit was not caught in the act.

The sheriff has a suspect in mind but lacks evidence to hold up his charge. If officials knew who the troublemaker was, the county could seek damages, which amounts to more than $7,000, from the owner.

Lab-grown chicken will soon be available in restaurants in Singapore after the country became the first to green-light meat created without slaughtering any animals.

US start-up Eat Just said Wednesday that its meat had been approved for sale in the city-state as an ingredient in chicken nuggets.

The news marks a "breakthrough for the global food industry", said the company, as firms increasingly try to find less environmentally harmful ways of producing meat.

"I’m sure that our regulatory approval for cultured meat will be the first of many in Singapore and in countries around the globe," said Josh Tetrick, co-founder and CEO of Eat Just.

The company conducted more than 20 production runs in 1,200-litre bioreactors to make the chicken alternative, and checks on safety and quality showed that its "cultured" product met food standards.

Kangaroos can learn to communicate with humans similar to how domesticated dogs do, by using their gaze to "point" and ask for help, researchers said in a study published on Wednesday.

The study involved 11 kangaroos that lived in captivity but had not been domesticated. Ten of the 11 marsupials intently gazed at researchers when they were unable to open a box with food, according to the report. Nine alternately looked at the human and at the container, as a way of pointing or gesturing toward the object.

"We interpreted this as a deliberate form of communication, a request for help," Alan McElligott, the Irish researcher who led the study, told Reuters in a call.

The findings challenge the notion that only domesticated animals such as dogs, horses or goats communicate with humans. (Reuters)

Black Friday is here — and it’s completely different

Black Friday sales are in full swing, but Trisha Stuart is unimpressed. The 55-year-old retired nurse from Green Valley, Ariz. finished her shopping weeks ago — and did it all online.

She spent far less than usual — about $200 on an air fryer for her husband and gift cards for their four adult children — because, she said, “covid has put us on edge.”

Stuart and her husband, who has early-onset Alzheimers, aren’t traveling this year. When she does leave the house, it’s mostly to pick up groceries from Walmart.

Americans spent a record $5.1 billion online on Thanksgiving Day, according to Adobe Analytics. Because so many consumers started their holiday shopping in October and early November, Black Friday week just doesn’t hold the same frenetic appeal, analysts say.

A bald eagle launched an aerial assault on a drone operated by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, ripping off a propeller and sending the aircraft into Lake Michigan.

The attack happened when the drone was mapping shoreline erosion near Escanaba in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Environmental quality analyst and drone pilot Hunter King said he had completed about seven minutes of the mapping flight when satellite reception became spotty.

King pressed a button to return the $950 drone to him and was viewing his video screen when the drone began to twirl.
