Spanking may affect brain development in children, Study Suggests

Spanking may affect a child’s brain development in similar ways to more severe forms of violence, according to a new study led by Harvard researchers.

The research, published recently in the journal Child Development, builds on existing studies that show heightened activity in certain regions of the brains of children who experience abuse in response to threat cues.

The group found that children who had been spanked had a greater neural response in multiple regions of the prefrontal cortex (PFC). These areas of the brain respond to cues in the environment that tend to be consequential, such as a threat, and may affect decision-making and processing of situations.

According to the study’s authors, corporal punishment has been linked to the development of mental health issues, anxiety, depression, behavioral problems, and substance use disorders.

British Town Crier Championships to be held in silence due to Covid

For the first time in its history, this year the British Town Crier Championships are to be held in perfect silence, with the country’s traditional news-bearers to be judged on the quality of their written cries alone.

While judges are usually focused on "three distinct parts of a cry" – sustained volume and clarity, diction and inflection, and content – this year they will focus on whether cries have stuck to the theme and the 140-word limit.

The theme for this year’s competition is "nature and the environment" in support of mental health week 10-16 May.

The British Town Crier dates back to at least the Norman invasion, with two bellmen appearing in the Bayeux tapestry. Town criers were employed to tell townspeople the latest news, proclamations and bylaws, grabbing their attention by ringing a handbell.

His ideal is distinct from mine.(他的理想與我的顯然不同。)

The story can date back to 13th century.(這個故事可以追溯至13世紀。)

Bolivian girl takes her virtual classes in a cemetery

Neydi, a Bolivian primary school student, logs on to virtual classes like many kids around the world during the pandemic. The only difference is the setting: surrounded by tombstones in a public cemetery in highland city La Paz.

Bolivia has kept its schools largely closed during the COVID-19 outbreak, pushing many parents to find novel ways to get their kids online for class. It is particularly challenging in a country with sporadic internet connectivity, limited access to expensive computers, and high costs for mobile data.

Neydi’s mother, Jeanete Alanoca, a 30-year-old indigenous Aymara who makes a living working at the General Cemetery of La Paz, decided to bring her daughter along with her to make use of the area’s free WiFi. Neydi does not have her own device and must use her mother’s cellphone to do her schoolwork.(Reuters)

Businesses in Texas have now become a battleground of sorts for wearing masks

Texas has been mask-free since the beginning of March, but it has created a standoff between business owners across the state trying to mitigate Covid-19 outbreaks and their customers.

"It’s amazing what people, what kind of people there are that will go out of their way to have their two cents put in that they’re against having to wear a mask," said Wayne LaCombe, co-owner at Legends Diner in Denton, Texas, added a $75 charge for people who debate the restaurant’s policy after Texas repealed its mask mandate and allowed businesses to operate at 100% capacity.

Texan business owners like LaCombe said they’ve fielded vicious calls from strangers and some have even received death threats.

go out of one’s way:慣用語,(特別是為其他人)非常努力地做。例句:The hotel front desk staff went out of their way to help customers.(飯店前台工作人員竭力協助顧客。)

I don’t need your two cents worth of advice.(我不需要你那不值一提的忠告。)

French woman spends three years proving she’s alive after court rules her dead

Jeanne Pouchain living in Saint-Joseph, France, has spent three years trying to prove she is alive, after a court declared her dead in 2017.

The 58-year-old hasn’t been able to get a driver’s license, open bank accounts or get health insurance because she has no official paperwork.

The event resulted from a former employee taking a case against Pouchain after losing her job with Pouchain’s cleaning company when it lost a big contract in 2000.

A labor tribunal then ordered Pouchain to pay 14,000 euros in damages, but because the case had been taken against her company and not Pouchain herself, the ruling was never enforced.

Surprisingly, the court ruled Pouchain as deceased in 2017 without proof of a death certificate. She accuses her former employee of fabricating her death to try to win damages from her heirs - her husband and son.(AFP)

The newspaper was asked to revoke the report and pay damages.(這家報社被要求撤回報導並支付賠償金。)

He took it as his responsibility to take care of his deceased wife’s family.(他視照顧亡妻家人為自身責任。)

She fabricated an excuse to leave early.(她編了理由早退。)
